cjfranca In regards to the pieces of SolarWinds I have customized, I find that keeping a single, "master" folder, so to speak, is essential in making things run smoothly. Otherwise, when you need copy mods back into SolarWinds, it can be difficult to maintain everything, and easy to overlook something. So, I have a master folder, which has all of my mods, allowing me to simply copy the entire folder into the root SolarWinds web folder, restoring all of my mods. I have a powershell script on the web server that deletes the resource cache file, copies the mod folder into the root SolarWinds folder, and then recycles the IIS pool. I have created an alert which is triggered when a node has a combination of various custom properties set, which will then run the powershell script on the IIS server. Then, once the script has completed, I go into customize any page, click on the icon to add a resource, and wait for the system to rebuild the resource cache file. After that, everything is back to normal, and all of my custom mods are back where they belong.

Is that something close to what you are asking?

organization chart within the company to better implement solariwnds:

Time for customization add node> set resources for monitoring> create user

groups and define who access what?

Create View and set the same for users, create maps

Hardware Monitoring> Maintenance Team Alert 1

Software Monitoring> Maintenance Team Alert 1

It's quite straight forward but I have seen time and time again customers don't monitor the Solarwinds Servers them selves. As a tip try to poll these servers by WMI to get all the counter information DQL etc..

Also if you have the SAM module install this badboy!

alex will enlighten you about polling problems to to keep your environment squeaky clean

As for customisation keep Orion report writer reports backed up and if you use custom icons keep them backed up running config wizard or doing a migrate will wipe this away..

And keep all your SQL/SWQL queries in a safe place these will always come in useful can't tell you how many times iv written a query and it's come in useful a few months later.. oh also comment on your code so you can easily review at a later date

Agreed, 100%. You need to monitor solarwinds within solarwinds or you're not going to know how it's doing.

Know your environment fully.

Monitor it completely (or if you can't afford complete monitoring, get Senior Administration to define what should NOT be monitored, and then the responsibility for failure is on their heads).

Back up all your configurations. Occasionally restore them, to ensure your backups are valid. I hope everyone with a Cisco ASA knows to backup the system:running-config file with NCM automatically. I had to modify the original ASA script in NCM, and I continually have to teach my team to use the modified template manually when adding a new ASA to NCM.

Set standards for everything (performance, security, auditing, logging, tools, latency, resilience, backups, etc.), put it in writing, and get Senior Management to accept it--or have them itemize what they don't want to succeed, and then you may explain why it will fail if they don't budget for staff, training, tools, and maintenance windows to do the job right.
