I've configured basic alerts to email me when a node's status changes. When I test the alert i get an email however when I actually take the node down no email is generated. Any ideas?

Might be worth having a look in the C:\ProgramData\Solarwinds\Logs\Orion\RunOrionJob.log file to see if any errors are shown. Also, make sure the job is ticked in the list of alerts to ensure it is active!
Is there a reason that you are using basic alerts instead of advanced alerts? Also, what are the trigger and reset conditions?

The box to disable alerts was checked for some reason. Unchecked that and it's working. Good call!
