is it best to split SQL & NPM onto 2 servers?

Hia,

We currently have NPM v8.5 & SQL sever 2000 enterprise edition all running on one server which is a bit clunky, we're about to upgrade to a new server with NPM v9 do most people split the app and the sql over 2 servers or is this unnecessary?

I'm thinking I could install the NPM on the new server and leave the database on the old server if this would give us better performance?

thanks for the info, I'll give it a try with SQL on the better server of the 2 then.

The licence we use is : Orion Network Performance Monitor SLX.

We don't use Netflow as we have crannog currently doing that, we only use NPM and the engineers toolkit which we have 5 or 6 licences for.

Hi Steve,

It would be best to split the SQL Server and Orion NPM. What license are you using?

Before you split them up, check the system requirements for Orion NPM 9.0. Use the old server for Orion if it matches the requirements and use the new server ( if more powerful ) for the SQL. The website is depending on the database server in order to get displayed.

It will make even more sense to plit if you are using additional modules. Orion will constantly write towards the database if you are using Netflow.
