NPM 9.5 ready for prime time?

I got a new SQL server and will FINALLY be able to upgrade NPM from 9.1 SP5 to 9.5. BUT, should I? 9.5 has been out for a while and I'm still reading about damaged/truncated maps and snmp polling issues. I have over a hundred maps and some of them took me a LONG time to create. (I spent DAYS on my data center map).

Are these issues just about resolved? I'm getting a lot of pressure to upgrade to 9.5 so I can upgrade NTA and SLA Manager as well but there's NO way I'm destroying my maps.

I started out in the beginning but kept my old DB copy and reverted back. I recently upgraded to 9.5 SP4 and it is working great. I too have spent a lot of time on my maps. none of them migrated over automatically, but there is a utility to run that will import them. (importmapbatch.exe under \solarwinds\orion\network atlas\

The only outstanding thing on the maps in my opinion is the labels are not lining up correctly, they are slightly off and trying to re-locate them does not work.

I also had to break my "top" map up due to response times, but that was from the initial go-round and it is much better with SP4.

Outside of that, it is more of a management paradigm change as they are moving to the web management and network atlas for mapping.

Community, please chime in here, but from my stand point, it should be good to upgrade now. However, what I always tell people and I do myself with any software is to grab a backup or snapshot of everything before just in case. Another thing you can look at to is taking a copy of your DB and putting it on another box and upgrade to make sure you are good to go and then do your production box.

At some point I'll either have to upgrade to 9.5 or get my money back for the modules I bought that need 9.5. Modules for SLX cost WAY too much to be shelfware.

We have addressed a lot of the issues experienced in the service packs for 9.5 and there are a lot of great new things in 9.5 and the updated modules, I would recommend upgrading, but that decision is ultimately yours as when to do it.

IMO, 9.5 with SP4 is stable enough to consider upgrading. Like you, I was being pressured to upgrade to 9.5 but I waited for SP3. Should have waited for SP4 but even so, it wasn't too painful. I ran into the web site service error that they fixed in SP4 and a couple of other things.

There are still some things being worked on or tweaked but all in all, I am happy with 9.5 SP4. YMMV.

Been running 9.5SP4 stable here for quite some time.

SP3 was subject to an IIS leak causing frequent IIS restarts which appears to have been resolved in SP4 as well as the time shift in syslogs reported under each device. Since the upgrade, it's been running smoothly.

My only complaint now with the move to web management, is my favorite browser fails to add/remove resources from devices. (Chrome) I need to load up IE to add new interfaces to devices. :-(

For myself. If you are running windows 2008 64bit. I would hold off. Presently they are reserching an issue that is occuring on that setup. SNMP polling stopping.

It is a major show stopper for my crew here.

I also waited on 9.5, until SP3. I opened something like 9 tickets regarding 9.5 in that immediate next few days. OF those 9, a few were quick fixes, 4 or 5 resolved in SP4, and the last few went into limbo/development/WTF.

Regardless of that, jumping into 9.5 SP4 should be entirely safe. I somehow managed to miss the whole map conversion problems everyone else had. I too had spent hours and hours on single maps.

My biggest complaint with 9.5 was the move to web console management. I have since become a supporter of this feature.

Heck, clone your production environment, and throw it up into a VM, and upgrade.

I went ahead and ran the upgrade yesterday. It got a bit hairy when we encountered a permissions issue that Support said was caused by forklifting the database to the temporary SQL 2005 backend instead of doing a backup/restore. Ultimately, we had to move the database again to the SQL 2008 server before the 9.5 installation was complete because we couldn't resolve the permissions issues on the SQL 2005 box.

Everything came out great. My boss loves the new look and the new features. Now if I just can figure out how to get my admin rights back. Orion is working fine but I don't have permission to manage anything anymore even though I'm an admin! But, I'm sure that will be a trivial issue to fix. :-)
