Is this normal? NPM version 9.5 with SP4

I am seeing this issue in both version 8.5.1 and version 9.5 with SP4. My machine is an IBM x3650 with dual processors quad-core 3.16 Ghz with 16GB RAM with RAID-5 2.0TB Drive. I am eval this product at the moment so that I can make recommendations to management next year 2010. However, I have BIG reservations about NPM 9.5 during my eval. I only monitor less than 10 devices on the systems. Here are some of my concerns:

- the browser login is EXTREMELY slow. Sometime, it hangs and crashed repeatedly. By the way, I am running Windows 2003 SP2 with the latest patches from microsoft. I installed NPM 9.5 with MS sql express that comes with the package. I then installed SP4 on top of that.

- The alert system is not very flexible,

- NPM not showing the correct BW utilization. Look at the attachment.

I have to say I am quite disappointed. I was hoping NPM would be "the one" so that I will not have to test other products such as NetMRI or some other CA/NetQoS product but now I guess I have no choice.

Please fix your product and make it better. I like to give it another try sometime in December.

Regarding the bandwidth issue you are seeing, what is the bandwidth statement in the router configuration for that interface?

SolarWinds will use the bandwidth config item to determine the interface speed. Is it actually a FastEthernet interface? The other thing to check is if you have enabled 64bit counters - you can get bad data returned from the device on high volume interfaces using the default 32bit counters (although it would normally under report).

I have never seen logon webpage issues using 9.5 - what has support said about this issue (have you opened a case and provided the diag's?)

In a previous post you mentioned that your SolarWinds NPM was behind a Checkpoint NGx R70 firewall. Do you see the same logon issues from a browser directly on the server? Are you using a local SolarWinds logon?

I see you are already running Orion 8.5 SLX - why the eval? (unless I guess you haven't retained the product maint). You are running the 8.5 and 9.5 eval on different servers? (they won't co-exist).

You should also note the SQL Express that is packaged with the eval will only use one processor and 1Gig RAM. On your server (assuming 64bit OS) I would install a full SQL Server version to get some benefit from your hardware.

Yes, the "allow 64 bits counters" check box is CHECKED

No I have NOT. I have other daily functions in addition to eval the new Solarwinds NPM.

http://x.x.x.x:8088, it took about 60 seconds to show me the login screen, another 90 seconds to bring up the first page after authentication

Point well taken but I am doing Eval at the moment, I do not need to do that. I am only monitoring only 10 devices so far. Therefore, a full install
of SQL Server is not important at this point.

I am looking at NPM 8.5.1 from a former colleague of mine whom I used to work with

and I tested this on his 8.5.1 NPM system and that's what I noticed I saw the same

thing. I am not using any NPM on production other than the eval process

The bandwith statement is actually contained in the interface config (but I can see from the show int that it is indeed a 100Mbit interface and Solarwinds is reporting it correctly).

You do however have a huge number of discards (input and output) on the interface. What is on the other end of the NIC? Is the speed/duplex settings set the same on each end (or if auto, did each end auto neg correctly?)

This looks like a speed/duplex issue on the NIC to me - you should see the errors/discards on SolarWinds for this interface.

Do you have a similar issue with your server that is running NPM?

The bandwidth issue sure looks like a rollover problem with the counters. What is the statistics polling interval for this device? If it's higher than 5 minutes, I would recommend setting it to 5 minutes and see what happens. Another good clue that it's a rollover problem would be to see if the behavior remains during times when the bandwidth utilization is at lower levels. It's also possible that the router is responding with bad counter info. The best way to see what information the router is responding with would be to manually snmpwalk one of the 64 bit interface counter OID's such as (ifHCInOctets 1.3.6.1.2.1.31.1.1.1.6).
