Failed Disk Alerting

Has anyone successfully configured monitoring and alerting failed disk drives? This seems like it would be a common feature so Im sure someone has figured it out. I have searched on the forums as well as tried a few ideas using Custom MIB Pollers but I just cant seem to find the right combination. Basically, I am trying to alert when a particular node has a failed disk drive. If anyone has done this or can provide some assitance I would be grateful!

What kind of servers do you have? It will matter, if you want to use custom MIBs.

Mostly Dell Power Edge, but we still have a few Dell Workstations and xSeries that we are monitoring. We also have several iSeries but I am not as worried about those at the moment.

Well I'm not a Dell expert but depending on the disk configurations it can be difficult, if not impossible to monitor disk failures with the current version of Orion. If you can find a mib to monitor overall condition of disk status that may be your bet bet. With more complex configs, you would need have the SNMP GET TABLE because (HP at least) presents array/disk status in table form. There has been some talk about GET TABLE functionallity being added to future releases of Orion, I hope it is available soon.

Your best bet is to carfully go through the available MIBs and see if any suit your need, if not there may be MIBs availabe from Dell.

We have a similiar requirement for our remote sites where we installed RAIDed hard drives (mirrored) but had no way of telling if one hard drive failed until the 2nd one died or a support tech noticed it whilst working on something else. So we're trialing solarwinds event forwarder, forwarding all windows event log entries to orion's syslog server then setting up an alert event to mail support if it see's an event describing the hard drive failure.

Tests have gone well and we will most likely put this into all of our store PCs. Although I am worried about the amount of space required (we have 272 stores currently open so there will be a lot of syslog messages flying around).
