Universal Poller Alert when OID is no longer valid

Howdy All,

I wanted to monitor a service on one of our Win2k8 servers and setup a poller to monitor the services' OID. When the service is running it reports the name of the service but when the service stops the OID is no longer valid. I setup an alert that says if the text returned isn't the service name then alert... but it doesn't work because the poller just stops updating because the OID is invalid.

Example

.1.3.6.1.4.1.77.1.2.3.1.1.6.83.101.114.118.101.114 returns "Server" when the service is running

If you stop the service it reports it's not a valid OID and my historical polls show that they haven't updated since I stopped the service. I was expecting it would report an error or a blank result which would result in an alert

Just to illustrate what is happening a bit more...

From the screencap you can see that it was happily polling every 5 minutes until the gap where I stopped the service.

Since no new polls are recorded I'm not getting an alert. One option I thought might work was trying to configure an alert that if a poll wasn't recorded in the last 6 minutes to trigger an alert but I wasn't able to find a good way to do this.

I realize this doesn't directly answer your question but have you looked at the APM module for Orion? It is specifically designed to do this amongst many other application level monitoring methods.

That is true, but I'd far rather make use of the purpose built SNMP monitoring tool I already own
