SQL 2008 Data Compression

Does anyone know if the NPM / NCM products support SQL Data Compression? My DBA is interested in saving some disk space and read/writes to the disk. Apparently this server has plenty of CPU for the compression/decompression operations. Looking for anyone who has turned on the SQL Data Compression and your experience with it.

Buy more RAM for caching, use a SAN with dedupe.

Did you have a chance to check on SQL Compression for the Solarwinds databases?

I checked with one of our application engineers. He does not recommend this feature as the most common problem with Orion performance is the performance of the SQL server. Also be aware that we have not QA tested our products with SQL 2008 data compression yet.

isn't the issue Orion usually has with SQL due to disk access? using SQL compression might lower the disk access while increasing CPU utilization which is usually low on the SQL server. My opinion is that it would help to speed the application up.

Hi,

We have turned on page compression for some big tables in out NetPerfMon database after having to deal with 0bytes free disk space on the DB server.

I tend to agree with the statement that with compression on, stress could be moved from disk to CPU, so if your CPU can decompress fast enough, you might not only save on disk space, but gain performance.

So far, looks like Orion is coping well with those tables.
