Unable to restart windows service using APMServiceControl.exe

Hello all,

I am attempting to restart a service on a remote server using the out of the box 'Restart a service' advanced alert.

I have set up the triggered action to point to the windows 'Alerter' service as a test.

When I test the alert...the alert log shows that the alert successfully triggered the execute program successfully but I check the remote server and the service has not been started/restarted....nothing in the event logs at all....

Any suggestions?

What do you have listed in the Program to execute field?

"C:\Program Files (x86)\SolarWinds\Orion\APM\APMServiceControl.exe" ${ComponentId}

Also, do you see the APMServiceControl in the Task Manager when the alert is generated?

Jeff, thanks for the quick response!

The 'Program to execute' field contains the following:

"C:\Program Files\Solarwinds\Orion\APM\APMServiceControl.exe" ${ComponentId} ( my pollinger server is running Windows 2003 SP2 32bit)

Also, I do not recall seeing the APMServiceControl in the task manager when this alert was tested.

I have another question as well, what if the node I am testing agains has multiple APMs assigned to it...how will Orion know which ${ComponentID} to use? I ask this becase when I tested earlier I kept seeing a different ComponentID in the test log than what I was trying to test....

Can you try testing the alert outside of the Alert Manager? For example, setup a quick monitor to monitor a non-critical service on the Orion server and then stop the service. Try to keep an eye on the Task Manager to see if you see the process start up.

The alert should pass the APMServiceControl the component ID of the component that is down. Also can you provide us with your trigger condition? Here is how I have mine setup;

Trigger Alert when all of the following apply
     Component Type is equal to 9
     Component Status is equal to Down
     Node Status is equal to Up

I did as you asked and set up a monitor on a non-critical windows service on one of my additional pollers. I modified the alert like you asked as well. The trigger conditions are as follows:

Trigger Alert when all of the following apply

Component Type is equal to 9

Component Status is equal to Down

Node status is equal to UP

I included one additional condition of node name to restrict the alert to the Orion polling server.

I stopped the service on the Orion poller, in this case I was monitoring the windows alerter server, and waited to see the alert fire.

In the alert manager I could see the alert, but I did not see the APMServiceControl process on the primary poller kick off when the node went to an alert condition...

Any suggestions?
