Network Performance Monitor (NPM)
Monitoring Internet connection... Is it possible?
rowle1jt
We are currently running on a business cable modem here at my office. We have a T1 in the works, but it will take some time for everything to fall into place.
My question is: Is it possible to monitor the actual "connection" to the Internet? I monitor the cable modem, but all it will allow me to monitor is connectivity. Basically, if NPM is getting networks statistics then it
thinks
the connection is "up". Our actual connection can be down and we would never get an alert.
Is there anyway to set up it up to send an alert if Internet connectivity is lost? It goes down every now and then during the night (cable company maintenance) and I like to know when it does if possible. I realize if I were off site that I would not get the message, but at this point I am no concerned about that.
Thanks!

Can't you just add www.google.com as an ICMP monitored node?

Ping a node out on the internet (my favorite is 4.2.2.2, sorry Verizon). If SW can't ping it, your connection is probably down.

Great, thanks guys!
That was super easy, took me longer to post the question than it did to implement your answer. I do appreciate it!
Next Question: Solar Winds wants $30 for "NotePage" to be able to send SMS messages to my Blackberry's... The link that the alert configuration pops up to buy "NotePage" is broken, not to mention that I don't see it mentioned anywhere on their site. Is SMS just not an option any more?
Thanks again!!!

If you have a router/firewall connected to your cable modem, the router will have a default gateway on it. I'd ping that.

Our blackberry's are still 6 months from being deployed so I don't have experience with them, but can 't you just send an email page? I have SMS on my phone and I send an email to my phone number. For example 5551112222@email.uscc.net

flipv,
Part of the problem with using smtp as an sms transport is that internet connectivity may be down and that very alert that you wanted will not be delivered.
NotePage allows you to directly use a cellphone or other device to send an SMS message straight to the destination without having to rely on internet connectivity.
