Implementing Solarwinds NPM

Hey guys,

i'm about to implement Solarwinds NPM in my new company right now. i have to install two polling engines and for each i have a dedicated sun server running windows server 2008 R2. the server has enough power and lot of ram and also two 146 GB harddisk running as a raid 1.

but i don't know how to partition the hard disk. are there any best practices how to partion the hard disk? or just standard?

Are you running your DB on the Sun servers or on something external?

There are a few theories on that. In my mind however, there is not much use for partitioning the same disk without a specific reason. You do not get any performance benefits from it. And more often than not the only thing that becomes of this is problems with your OS drive running out of space.

I used to partition religiously but I stopped after years of doing it when I found it caused more issues than it would solve.

Just my 2 cents.

I will add to that however that in the case of a DB box, you would indeed do it to protect the OS from the DB.

I run the DB on an external server. the two server i'm setting up are just polling machines.

yesterday I installed windows server 2008 and added no partition. just the hard disk as one big partition. is that ok or can I get more performance in another way?

I would also be thankful for some hints how to customize the OS to get more performance out of it.
