hello - new to Orion - some quick questions to get oriented quickly and setup smoothly here....
would appreciate some input some from vetrans out there, that may not necessarily be in the manuals.
have the unlimited license, will be monitoring several hundred switches/routers/etc. for starters. i'm wondering what people out there recommend as far as monitoring ports. when importing in batch, for example, i notice it defaults to importing all nodes that are administratively up only. while it's obvious i don't want to litter my logs with red alerts as copper ports go up/down all day as people shut off/turn on/reboot their computers - i still think it would be worthwhile to have these ports monitored to watch for duplex mismatches, high port utilizations, and the like.
so one question would be - do most of you find this useful, or not? or do you end up mainly just monitoring uplink ports and find this other info noise? and if you do monitor them - how do you filter out the every day ups and downs so you don't have to wade through all the useless up/down alerts that don't matter, and concentrate only on the ones that do?
and also - monitoring on every "virtual", and "loopback" and "rif0" (?) and other confusing interfaces. I understand some of these are my associated VLANs, but i'm not sure what some of the others are. i excluded the loopback, as I didn't see that being useful, as i did the management interfaces. what are your thoughts on these, typically?
thanks for any other tips you may have.
thank you
