Would you allow Flash on your Orion server?

I'd like to ask a question of the Thwack community of Orion users: We are considering using Adobe Flash as the technology to deliver some new map functionality in Orion. It would be some time in 2008 before we could deliver it, but it would greatly improve the creation and management of maps.

The question is whether enabling Flash on your Orion web server would be a problem. Would it violate any policy? Would you have to get exceptions to AD Group Policy to allow it?

Well, first off, it would not be a problem using Flash on Orion, I would welcome the change.

However, I feel that the resources on the solarwinds side developing a new flash interface would be better spent on working on core functionality, things that are legitimate problems. Converting the currently dynamically generated gifs to new fancy flashes is not neccessarily a need of mine. I would like to see something more practical - say, database integration between cirrus and orion, for examples sake.

I think you're making some assumptions that are not necessarily true. We would never rewrite anything just to make it cooler. I know that there are engineering teams that do that sort of thing, but that's just not our thing. Cool technology that doesn't solve customer problems is dead end. We don't always get it right, but solving customer problems is always what we're aiming for.

For this specific issue, customers have asked us to do a lot things with Map Maker and map visualization. We haven't done these yet because the existing Map Maker makes it difficult, so for those customers, there is a legitimate problem. To solve that problem, we are looking at our options, which includes whipping the existing code into obedience. But another option is to switch to a flash-based map technology. We haven't made up our minds yet, but I started this thread just to verify that we weren't considering an option that was a non-starter for our customers.

Now I understand what you're saying, but to say that working on Cirrus/Orion integration is more important than fixing mapping is just a statement of priorities. Customers who don't own Cirrus yet probably would disagree with your ranking.

To be clear, we are planning to do both improved mapping and Cirrus integration, but there are dependencies in each case that constrain the timing of when they can each happen, which is a roundabout way of saying I don't have dates for anything. :-)

It's no problem here.

Anything done to get Orion maps functional would be great.

I quit using Orion maps since they can't display an interface/link status.

It would also be nice to be able to modify the flash action script as well.
