orion backup on SQL Express 2005

Question

Hi guys

I was wondering if there is an officially endorsed method of running scheduled Orion backups when the database is on the local system, running on SQL Express 2005. The Database Maintenace application allows you to create a job, but SQL Express no longer contains the SQL Server Agent component, so I can't get the job to run.

Am I in an unsupported configuration, or have I missed something totally?

I currently have script in MSDE as

EXECUTE master.dbo.xp_sqlmaint -D "netperfmon" -RebldIdx 0 -RmUnusedSpace 1000 0 -HtmlRpt "E:\Solarwinds\backup\NetPerfMon-Compact.htm"'

to port this to SQL 2005 Express. I look through expressmaint TSQL from www.sqldbatips.com/showcode.asp, but don't see the equivalent syntax. Can you please give me few pointers?

Yes, SQL Agent is not a part of SQL Express. If you want automated backups you might try the management tool, SQL Server 2005 Management Studio Express Edition (SSMSE)

Thanks for replying.

I can do a manual backup as per those instructions just fine. What I am trying to achieve is the situation I had with v7.5 on MSDE 2000 where the database maintenace plan did a daily backup automatically. I beleive this relied on the SQL Server Agent for the scheduling element, and there appears to be no agent in SQL Express 2005.

Does that make my problem any clearer??
