ESXi Physical Host Monitoring

Ok so I now have v10 installed and can use the API's to monitor my ESXi hosts, pull in the running VM's and get basic data etc.

My question is, how can I monitor the physical hosts systems? From the vSphere client I can see hardware health status but is there a way to display some of this in NMP. Things like PSU status etc so I can alert from SW if I lose a PSU....

Why have things set up to alarm in vSphere client when I can do it from Solarwinds?

Looks like we may not be able to use the Universal Device Pollers to monitor hardware on an ESXi 4.0 host running on an HP server? Sounds like the Insight Providers that are provided for ESXi by HP don't support SNMP anymore:

True, just WEBM/CIM but 100VG-AnyLAN was a great idea too, look what happened with that.

Hrm, this is a bit of a let down and cripples our ability to monitor systems with Orion in the way that we would like.

I wonder if there is any chance of Orion supporting CIM and WBEM in the near future or at all?

Honestly, despite what this document describes I have not seen overwhelming support for those standards in the system monitoring community.

So what else would you like to monitor on your ESX/ESXi boxes outside of what we provide today?

I think that we should at least be told if this is going to be an option for NPM at all. I realize NPM is focused a lot on the network side of things, including networking hardware, but so many of us have fleshed out NPM to be "the" server tool as well (aside from applications of course). I think we're all a little concerned that with the purchase of Hyper 9, that any new features for VMware monitoring will be diverted into that tool, which, unless I am wrong, is not integrated with the Orion suite at this time. We aren't in the market to buy another tool, although we did demo H9 a few months back before SW purchased it (admittedly, it is a good tool).

I am not exactly against buying another module for VMware it if sits within Orion and can share the same database. I know there is a lot of value in the H9 product that a lot of us have been looking for (datastore monitoring especially), but we don't want to have separate environments, nor hold onto a tool that isn't going to carry us into the next revision of VMware. As it is now, i have 150 hosts not being monitored anymore because they are ESXi (for hardware).

I realize all of this may not be known, but you had to be thinking about these questions when H9 was purchased..

I fully agree with LGentile's latest post. We need to know if support for hardware monitoring will be available as part of NPM.

We have both NPM and APM and it far away from optimal that we cannot get the status of our VMware servers.
