Launching PuTTY from System Manager

Hi all,

Is there a way to launch an alternative telnet client other than telnet.exe with the "telnet" menu item in System Manager (not web interface)? I have performed the reg hack to make PuTTY my default telnet client but Orion is still launching telnet.exe instead. The reg hack works on the "T" telnet on the web interface but I prefer to use the console application.

I use secure crt but with IE7 with wont launch.

Is there a workaround or fix?

I'm guessing that the System Manager is hard-coded to use "telnet.exe", or probably just telnet. Whatever the case, a hack/workaround to get this working with PuTTY would be to rename "putty.exe" to "telnet.exe". You can either place it in the system32 folder (after backing up the original "telnet.exe") or make sure the PuTTY folder is configured in the path before the system32 folder.

This is actually easy, its getting it to work with SSH thats a pain.

Open regedit and under the key My Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\telnet\shell\open\command set the default to the putty folder and putty.exe

Isn't there any other way to do this?

1. I have a mix of devices, some are telnet, some are ssh. I want to be able to pick and choose.

2. Windows File Protection will stop you from simply copying putty over the telnet.exe file so you need to modify the path.

3. I already have a program registered as my default telnet url handler, and Orion 8.5.1 ignores this and opens telnet directly
