Web Interface slow in 9.1

I'm currently testing Orion NPM in our network. It's running on a dual-core processor (2x3,4 GHz) with 1 GB RAM. The OS is Windows Server 2003, we're using Microsoft SQL Server Express 2005 and .Net Framework 3.5 SP1. It's a rather small network with about 20 computers and servers.

When I start the Web Interface it takes at least half a minute for the Login-screen to start. Most sites take about 10 to 20 seconds to build up. When I click on a server or PC, it takes about 3 or 4 minutes for all statistics to show up. After that time it starts loading again.

I'm pretty sure that's not how it's supposed to be. Any ideas?

I think it's hard to diagnose what's going on with the info available. Could you open a ticket? Please reference this thread.

What type of network? What speeds are you running one each of the PCs 10/half, 100/half, or 100/full? What speeds are you running on the servers 100/full, 1000/full? Are you using a switch or hub to connect the PCs and Servers? If cisco switch, try to hard code the ports for the workstations to 100/full, Servers to 1000/full(if they support it), then hard code the network cards on the workstations and servers to match the port settings. If that doesn't fix your problem. try the following:

If you have anti-virus on those servers, try to enter the following exceptions to the real-time scanning options:
2. C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\Data (or the location of the data files. You can find this in the database properties).
3. C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\Logs (or the location of the log files. You can find this in the database properties).
4. C:\Inetpub\SolarWinds (Location of your website).
5. C:\Program Files\SolarWinds (location of the Orion Install).
Also, I would setup e-mail alerts that get sent out when a site goes down. I found that the best setting is to set the alert to send and e-mail out when the circuit has been down for 3 min, and then end out the reset after the circuit has been back up for 3 min. this eliminates issues where the circuit has a small hiccup and doesn't blast out alerts all day.
Open up your web console and click on admin, then on Web Console Settings. You can adjust the Map Cache Timeout and Report Cache Timeout settings to a higher number to eliminate having to re-query the database every time someone clicks on a link. I found the best setting to be around 240 seconds for the 8 people that keep the website opened. It is still a little slow (7 seconds to open the main page with out the cache, and then less that 2 sec each click after that). It also dropped the CPU usage of both of my servers from always 100% to around 20% most of the time.
You may want to check the page file of the sever and make sure that it is set to the recommended for the start value, and the double it for the max value, if you have enough disk space.
Also you can check if the following settings are correct:
2. On the server, right click on My Computer and click properties, the click the Advanced tab of the System Properties box
3. Then select Settings under the Performance area. On the Performance options, choose "Adjust for Best performance" apply that.
4. Then click on advanced tab, you want adjust for best performance of: Background Services checked and under memory usage, you want System Cache checked.
5. The Virtual memory section is where you want to adjust the page file by clicking on Change. That will open the Virtual Memory box.
6. Click on each drive and either choose System managed size or enter Initial Size and make it the recommended value then double that number for Maximun Size and click set.
7. Then choose the next drive and enter the same settings (if you have more that one drive). Click on OK on the Virtual Memory box, then OK the Performance Options box, Then OK the System Properties box. this will ask you to reboot for the changes to take effect. If you have any Basic Alerts or Advanced alerts setup, I would turn them off before rebooting, otherwise you will get a ton of alerts after rebooting the SQL server.

Thanks for your support but this sounds like a lot of trialling and erroring in out network, I guess I will go with another product.

They don't seem to cause any trouble. Bad luck, the program looked really good...

Hey.. One last chance:

In windows.. Ctrl+Alt+Del and open Task Manager.. and look for "sqlservr.exe" (i think that's the name) ..

How much memory is it consuming?.. More than your Total Physical memory? .. Then do the following!:

Go to your SQL Studio Manag...

Right click your "Server Instance" (i.e. SQLExpress or something like that), click on Properties.

A new window will open: "Server Properties: <Instance name>"

- Inside there, go to MEMORY

- On the right side, check value for "Maximum server memory (in MB):" .. By default there's a loooong long value

- If your Total Mem is 1 GB or so.. change it to: 700

- If your Total mem is 4 GB (for example), change it to: 1800

How's "sqlservrv.exe" now? .. it should not be more than 700 MB now... .. check your website speed now.. is it better?

One way to test web performance is to click on the title of each resource and see how long it takes to load when it detaches. But if you're having problems on all pages, it's probably something to do with the database. Your performance is much slower than normal, and it would probably take just a little troubleshooting to diagnose.

If you're not a cusotmer yet, Support is not an option, but you can get pre-sales help from a Sales Engineer. We'd hate to lose you as a customer because the product didn't run well in your test environment--at least not without the chance to help fix your issue.
