Basic Question on Creating Views

Question

Hi!

What is the best way to group all devices. I would like them in a tree/directory format and drop down to see all nodes inside them.

For example if I create a Branch Routers folder I would like to see/place all the routers inside this. Just makes the devices easier to manage.

It definitely depends on your environment and geographical locations, but here is how we do it. I've created severla Custom Properties that i use. "Building", "Data_Center" & "Node_Type".

Level 1: Building

Level 2: Data Center

Level 3: Node Type (Server, Router, Access Switch, Core Switch, Firewall...etc)

Hi, There are a number of ways to display the nodes and everyone has a different approach to it. I use the tree method and use 3 different custom properties to group the Nodes (I believe 3 is the max) So I have created 3 custom properties and populated them (in the custom properties section) for each node. Tag1/Tag2/Tag3 Example, if you had a worldwide network. Tag1 would be your Country Tag2 would be your city Tag3 would be your office On my homepage I have added the "All Nodes - Tree" view. You can then click Edit on that view resource and select the three levels under the Grouping Nodes section. You also have the option here to group any nodes with no Tags into unknown groups or let them be added to the bottom of the list. Worth noting you dont have to use three levels if you dont want to. This will show you all your nodes grouping them first by country then by city finally by Site. Another tip, I have duplicated the above view and under Filter Nodes (SQL) section added the text "Status<>1 AND Unmanaged=0 AND Status<>11" This view will show you only the nodes that are not up, not unmanaged and are not external. i.e the ones that are down. With the added advantage that it keeps the tree structure. Its not perfect as it doesnt show the ones with down interfaces but without the tree function my list gets too long. Hope this helps
