Help - database growth out of control

Since we upgraded from 7.8 to 8.0.1 and 8.0.2 are database is growing out of control. I've worked with support in backing down some of our collections. But there are some new tables, especially two, with version 8 that are just crazy. The worst table is trapvarbinds which has over 350 million rows. This table is about 2/3 of our whole database. I've looked at the data. There is a lot of Cisco oid and SNMP oid data. Here is an example of one insert:

CAN SOMEONE HELP ME TAME THIS TABLE!!!

How long are you retaining your data? I believe there is a setting in Orion somewhere to adjust this but I'm not in front of my server right now.

As Mithrilhall stated there is an option under the File menu that allows you to set how long until Orion auto summaries the data.

I'm maintaining the data for one year. But why would the growth rate increase so much after the upgrade? We were not expecting this. Why should I have to lower the duration of the data I'm collecting because I've gone to a new release? That's just wrong. Can't someone tell my why the growth rate has increased so much? I can't seem to find anything on this subject in the release notes or the admin guide. Is anyone else experiencing this issue since going to the 8.0.2 release?

It could be possible that you adjusted your data retention when you originally installed Orion and when you upgraded it changed the retention back to the default.....but I'm just guessing here.

I'm still running v7 myself so I'm not positive.

I don't have the Netflow Traffic Analyzer installed if that is what you are referring to? I am keeping my daily stats for 365 days in Network Performance Monitor.

How many nodes are you monitoring? Servers/Routers/Switches/Etc

How many of those nodes are sending syslog messages and how often? I don't think Orion displays a MPS (Messages Per Second) anywhere "but should". You could try reducing the amount of of syslog messages being sent, or drop extraneous messages at the syslog server with a filter rule. This should reduce the number of syslog messages you are trying to store in the database.

For some reason the growth has stopped the last few days. I can't explain it. I still would like someone to help me analyze the type of rows being stored in the TrapVarBinds table. But looks like we are good for now.

I have the exact same problem since the upgrade. This evening I found out that the TrapVarBind is simply the Trap Receiver that was installed together with the 8.0.x version. This is the only explanation that I can find, and have stoppet is as today, and will se if it helps tomorrow.

Thanks! I will try the same. This table is now over 90% of my database. Is there any way to trim this table or archive the data in the table w/o impacting relationships with other tables?

Well I worked with tech support last night. They told me to delete all of the rows out of the traps and trapvarbinds tables since I don't use them. They told me most customers do not use these two tables. My database went from 71GB to 500MB. after truncating the two tables. I can't believe no one else has reported this issue?

Run database manager, than query table.

than run "truncate table table-name"
