Node List - Custom Grouping and Filtering

I am trying to filter nodes based on a custom property. I am able to successfully do this as long as I have populated the custom property (SortGroup). However, I want to create a separate node list that contains all the nodes that do not the custom property populated (i.e. if they are newly added nodes or the custom property is deliberately left blank). When I try to filter on SortGroup='' no nodes appear in the list. Is there a different way to query for a custom property field containing a null value?

Try this filter:
SortGroup IS NULL

If that does not work, try creating a Report in Report Writer to show the same list of Nodes.

That filter worked fine. I had tried everything except for the word "IS". Thank you for your help.
