Could using Orion NPM Syslog cause NPM as a whole to crash?

Hi everybody, I know this may be a bit of an odd question but at my work we have been running into some discussions with if we should or should not use Orion NPM's built in syslog feature, or buy Kiwi Syslog to run on a seperate PC/server.

The main issue is that we use Orion NPM as our main "eyes" on our network and we don't want to do anything to cause any sort of instability. We also would like to setup a syslog server to capture all logging messages from our devices, (about 20 switches and their battery backups). Is it a better idea to go with Kiwi on a standalone system, or is it okay to use the syslog feature built into Orion?

I would assume it's okay to use Orion's built in syslog, but I also don't want to be responsible for anything crashing

The Orion syslog may work for this. It will depend on the volume of logs and how long you want to retain them for. Generally I don't recommend setting Orion syslog to retain logs for a long period of time.

The Syslog server that is contained withing the Orion product is not designed to be a log management solution. It's purpose is for alerting based on specific syslog events that you know to be a problem in your environment. While I haven't seen Orion syslog crash the system, I have seen it use almost all of the CPU in a system when not being used or configured properly.

We're really only interested in using this for basic switch logging messages, and specifically to set Orion alerts for certain messages; for example if a power supply shuts down, etc. There aren't a lot of messages that would be sent to Orion from our devices since there aren't a lot of messages being generated by the switches.

Would this be a scenario in which using Orion's built in syslog makes sense? If you have any better recommendations I'd be more than happy to take any advice.
