Best Practice for Vcenter Guests CPU Utilization

Hi, My understanding is that the Vcenter guests return false value to SolarWinds/NPM since CPU it's a shared resource. This is because may a number of guests are assigned to the same host CPU. Therefore, we are not setting alerts for CPU utilization due to this issue (this weekend the application server’s processor hit 100% for a prolonged period for an hour and caused issue. Could someone help what is best practice for monitoring and alerting on VMware guests CPU utilization. I have created many cases related to this issue and have not received any direct answers. I appreciate all the help!
