Orion Hot Standby

We are currently investigating the Orion Hot Standby pack and have a couple of questions.

Does anyone else use this and have they found it beneficial and easy to setup and use?

Can it be installed on a remote site across the WAN?

Does it support both the core NPM and also remote pollers?

What is the maximum number of pollers it will support?

Just like any other poller, some people do this, but we recommend against it because it doesn't perform to our expectations.

Does it support both the core NPM and also remote pollers?

It's a one-to-many relationship, so it can fill in for any of several pollers.

What is the maximum number of pollers it will support?

There's no max. But keep this in mind: It can step in for any of several pollers, but it can only replace one poller at a time. If you have 10 pollers, and two go down, only the first will be replaced by the HSE.

We are actively building a solution that will roll up data from multiple databases, and that solution is designed to work over a WAN. With that architecture, the question of cross-WAN failover for the hot standby engine should be moot.

How will the roll-up feature be licensed? We were considering implementing redundancy soon but now might want to wait as this seems like a better solution.

Installation is basically same as standard Orion. Just need to keep redundant website in sync in order to mirror production/primary website. You do this by mirroring any IIS settings and running the Orion WebConfigurationBackup tool>Create Backup on the primary system, port the backup file to the HS system and run WebConfigurationBackup>Restore Backup on HS system. Next, copy over any Maps & Custom Reports. HS should be good to go. I hope I haven't missed anything.

Can it be installed on a remote site across the WAN?

We have 2 primary pollers at the central site and the hot-standby system at a geographically remote site. The central and remote sites are gigibit connected via a gigibit WAN and it works well for us.

Our setup consists of two separate NPM installations, each using their own database. If I implement an HSE will I have to choose which NPM setup the HSE should backup?
