NPM fails to configure after 9.5.1 update

Greetings:

I updated my NPM from 9.5.0 SP3 to 9.5.1 this week, and I have run into a problem. When I try to run the NPM, Syslog Viewer or Trap viewer, it stops because the C:\Program Files\Solarwinds\Orion\AdminGuide.url file points to nothing. It only offers me to retry, or cancel the configuration. I have a snapshot of the Desktop at the moment of interest. In the background is an Explorer window that shows the file in question. There are 2, because I tried to create a replacement.

I have tried to rename, remove and replace it but is states that permissions are needed (I am an admin) or the file is in use by another program (most likely). Properties only show the standard attributes, which are normal. I stopped the Solarwinds Services to release the hold on the file, but this did not work either.

I think my only option is to disable the Solarwinds services and reboot. This MIGHT free the grip, and give me a chance to edit the file or replace it.

Anyone have this issue? Any suggestions on how to proceed?

Hi Russ,

We haven't seen this problem so far and we are not able to reproduce it. Could you please check which program has locked the file?

You can use Process Explorer from MS (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx) to do this. Click the Find menu and select Find Handle or DLL... Type the file name (AdminGuide.url in this case) and click the Search button. You should see the list of applications which are accessing the file.

Now you can stop/restart the process and release the file. Please let us know the results.

In order to receive technical support, you will need to be current on your SolarWinds maintenance. Complete the form. You will not be able to upload your Orion diagnostics, but you will receive an email back that allows you to upload diagnostics.

Thanks for the help.

The issue is resolved. The AdminGuide.url was being held by cidaemon.exe. Once I stopped that, the file disappeared and the configuration went fine.

All is good now.

The Process Explorer is a nice tool. It was exactly what I needed. I will recommend it to our IT group.
