Some Questions

Hi all,

I've some questions concerning Orion Network Management Tool:

In the web interface you can get some graphs about line utilization, packet loss, response times etc. Now what I would like to do is when a limited user logs in that he can see a graph with the data of the actual day, nothing more and nothing less. Is there a way to do this? I don't want to get the Custom chart layout, because this gives more than only the chart.

We have Cisco wireless access points. 350 series and 1200 series. I can't get them in solarwinds. SNMP is enabled on all the Access points. I see following error: does not respond to SNMP queries using "password. The password is correct and SNMP is enabled!

Same problem for a temperature module of APC.

For the graph, you could just make a copy of the resource and edit it so that it's not customizable. Granted, this will work until you run across a user who is smart enough to manipulate the URL directly.

Your mileage will vary on access points. At best, you'll get an Ethernet and Wireless interface...at worst, you'll only be able to ping them. Have you tried using any of the SNMP tools in the desktop toolsets?

As far as the Cisco 1200 series Access Points are concerned, make sure you are using the SNMP Admin. Community string you entered on the Express setup page. This is also the same as the user name. Hope this helps.

Create a custom webpage with RAW html which only has the graphs on it. Then add it to the customer's menu bar.

Here is an example of what I have done for graphing the availability of our call centers and sending this out once a month
using the Report Scheduler:

Ian,

I actually made it part of the Orion website.

From the Webadmin page go to "customize views" > +Add
Use the default "summary" type of view and name it something like - Custom Charts.
Then under "add resources" select miscellaneous > Custom HTML or text
Once you have created the resource, edit the page and paste in the html code of your choice.

I grabbed the code by right clicking on the chart I wanted and selecting properties.
I just grabbed the URL displayed and pasted it as part of the raw html code above.

You can now add this view to an existing Orion web page, or add another item to the menu bar which references this view
(call it Report Graphs). I actually created an account called Reports just for my managers to view this data, with it's
own custom Menu bar.

Break it down a little. tell me about automating reports scheduling an emailing them. This is part of my current task and I've been trying to figure this out for past month.
Say I've create a couple of custom reports and wanted those reports run weekly(A) and then automatically be emailed (B) to the managers???

How do I set up both A and B. do I need any special or 3rd part utilities?

First of all, you must have the Orion Report Scheduler installed. This is an add-on component for customers with mainentance support.
You can download it from: support.solarwinds.net/.../Unsupported.cfm

"Report Scheduler The Report Scheduler lets you schedule reports to be e-mailed or printed on a regular basis. Limited Support is provided for this component."

Once you have this installed, it allows you to schedule any Orion web page to be e-mailed.
Any web page report can now be e-mailed, including reports generated from the Orion Report Writer which are published to a web page. Just copy and paste the URL into the report scheduler (or you can browse to the page in the report scheduler).

Much thanks for that reply. I did get scheduler downloaded and installed. That was the easy part.

I selected a custom report and a default just for test. The configuration seem fairly straight forward. I'm using my NT username/password combintion, and pointing to the url of the report I want to email.
Now, upon checking the status after the scheduled time had passed it says idle and there is a next run date.

However to this day nobody has received a sinlge emailed report.
I cant even blame my firewall guys or the exchange mail gateway server cause SolarWinds is and has been sending me and my IT group emailed alerts on a regular based using the same mail gateway IP and config information ( DNS, WINS ).

This is real frustrating. Any Ideas>>>>>> What is your Setup.

When you test sending the e-mail from Report Scheduler using the run job now button, it is using the account you are currently logged in with.
If no one is logged into the server when the Scheduled report is supposed to run,
then is can't send the job. Did you specify the Account credentials that will be running this report? Have you tried viewing the report but selecting the web page using the browse button in the Report Scheduler?

You should also be able to see the log of reports sent in the following location:

C:\Program Files\SolarWinds\Network Performance Monitor V7\RunOrionJob.Log

with any associated errors.

NG, I can see the web page, but here's what the log shows...every line>>>>>which explains the failures.
But what invalid sytax ???.

I'm usually logged into the SW box. have you seen this error..see below:

Marlon,
Looks like you are trying to send an HTML export from a Report Writer report. I'm making that assumption because of the "E:\" in the URL instead of an actual URL.

The Report Scheduler actually downloads and sends WEB PAGES, not files. When setting up a Report Scheduler job, surf to your Orion server and select the report from the web. It needs a URL, not a path and filename to generate the report.

When the job is run, it will log in to your Orion web server and run the report (or view or whatever) and e-mail or print it.

a basic HTML question regarding the following - generating a webpage based upon the sample script from Network guru..
