DB Maintenance

Can some send me the details on what Orion does during the nightly database maintenance period? All I see in the admin guide is :

"The primary tasks that are available for maintaining a SQL database are data summarization and database compaction. Data summarization occurs automatically as a part of the nightly maintenance program."

Can someone from SW detail what actually is happening? Our DBAs want to know because they'd like to put in a maintenance schedule as well.

In Orion there are two maintenance procedures that are conducted sequentially with the "Compact Database" option from within the Database Manager.

The first is the Nightly Maintenance procedure that statistically summarizes the detailed data into hourly and the hourly stats into daily stats. Daily stats and network events are then deleted from the DB at configurable intervals. This process empties old records but does not delete them. The second part of the process, the compaction, takes care of the empty records and the resultant "whitespace" that comes from normal day to day database functionality. Compaction also re-indexes the DB.

If you go into the DB maintenance folder, there’s a .handler file and open it with the text editor, you can see the stored procedures we’re using.

I would like to disable the nightly database shrink. We want this only to be performed during our own database maintenance plan we run weekly. Thanks.

Our database maintenance does not actually include a DB shrink. We do have that stored procedure there in the event that someone wants to run it themselves, but the nightly maintenance doesn't call it. There is no nightly shrink to disable.
