NPM logging on procedure going slow

Hello all,

When I want to log on to the NPM ui using a browser, it takes up to 5 minutes until I am able to log on to it.

Once logged on, I can use this website, but it goes slow as well.

Does anyone know what I need to check or to adjust in order to be able to speed up things a little bit.

A quick test will tell you which direction to search in. Most of the pages in Orion(including the login) are pulling from the database and if they're slow, it's because that's where the bottleneck is. Try calling a local page once you're logged in, such as http://x.x.x.x/Orion/Admin/. If this loads up quickly, your culprit is likely long running queries to the db. If it's slow, your Orion server is where the troubleshooting should be focused on.

Most of the time, this will be the database. There's a number of things that could be affecting this-and some basic SQL performance tuning could go a long way. One of the common mistakes we see here is that the disk utilization on the RAID focuses on readability, but Orion is really concerned with disk writes.

#5 - Add more RAM. Doesn't really matter how much you have, adding more will almost always help. Be sure that your SQL instance and OS are capable of consuming the additional RAM and if not make it so.

#4 -  Just say "no" to RAID 5. It's great for application servers but horrible for database servers where I/O performance is important.

#3 - Place the data and log files (.mdf and .ldf) on separate logical drives and separate channels or controllers.

#2 - Unless your SAN is optimized for high I/O vs. large I/O stick with a locally attached disk arrary.

#1 - Buy disk controllers with battery backed-up write-back cache. The more the better, but at least 256MB.
