What would it take to get a CPU poller for Ubiquiti switches?

I would like to be pointed towards any resources about building a poller - I've poked around Thwack a bit and can't seem to find anything like that. I am not a developer but can certainly inquire of some co-workers with that skill set, if I knew what would be involved and of course be able to explain it to them in a manner that they can understand;-). My background is in networks, network management, and network security. I've been working with SNMP for a couple of decades now. As stated above I would like to get a CPU poller for Ubiquiti switches (in particular there Edge series of switches) to work with NPM. We are running 12.0.1 right now. I've tried every CPU poller I can find and they all say "not a match" even the new Thwack poller called "Ubiquiti Vendor Name" by chad.every. I have tried using snmp-walk.exe against a Ubiquiti switch (EdgeSwitch 16) but it times out. I also noticed that snmp-walk.exe only allows a 5 character community name. NPM can talk SNMP with our Ubiquiti switches - i have all of them configured for ICMP and SNMP polling and the SNMP test functionality in the node properties, for these Ubiquiti switches, is successful.

Just an FYI if anyone is interested: we know have this data being graphed and monitored by PRTG, on a Windows Server 2012R2 machine, via telnet sessions using Perl scripts, in turn using CygWin. Worked with a fellow in Peru whom I found in the Ubiquiti forum, who got this to work for us. In short we had to NOT use SNMP.

You are on the right track with the snmp walk. You'll need to try a different tool to peruse the device. Do you have the Engineers Toolset? Another option would be to use the Custom Poller building tool and manually browse through - I've found a lot of things doing that. I can help with that if you aren't familiar.

Thanks RIchard for your response! I have Cacti running in our environment so I got some OIDs from its data sources (it uses Net-SNMP to poll devices) for that Ubiquiti EdgeSwitch 16 that has been my primary victim in trying to get this set up. Do you know how I can obtain the custom poller builder tool? i tried searching in this forum but only saw some related posts. No I don't have the Engineer's Toolset. I'll have to see about remedying that;-)

It's part of the standard product. You have to launch it from the SolarWinds Server itself.It's actually called the Universal Device Poller.

I launched Universal Device Poller, clicked on New Universal Device Poller, next on Browse MIB Tree in the Define Your Universal Device Poller. In the Browse MIBx window I was able to select my device (same victim as above) and hit Test - Test was successful here just like it is in the node's properties page. However when I search MIBs I'm now sure what to do in the Search MIB Tree window that appears. As I don't know the Name, Description or OID I am looking for (the three options in the drop-list for Search By:) I clicked on Help but got the error "The system cannot find the file specified". I next tried selecting OID and the Search field auto-populated with 1.3.6.1, nothing else. I'll do some more research on this. I'm just about out the door for the weekend, will return on Monday. If you know exactly which OIDs to poll for CPU and Memory (hopefully can tell from your Cacti pollers that are working), you can override what NPM polls by default using the instructions here

Thank you HolyGuacamole! I was able to obtain the OIDs using the built-in version of SNMPWalk.exe - which I didn't know existed! I found in the output OID .1.3.6.1.4.1.4413.1.1.1.4.8.1.2.9 with string = "cpuUtilMonitorTask" with OIDs below that, some of which might be related to the CPU Monitor task (tl7Timer0, tap_monitor_task, simPts_task, dtlTask, hapiRxTask, SNMPTask, radius_task, ipMapForwardingTask, openrTask, RMONTask, and (lighttpd)). And below those are what look to be the actual cpuUtilMonitorTask data, here's one example:

.1.3.6.1.4.1.4413.1.1.1.1.4.8.1.3.0 = STRING: " 5 sec ( 0.20%) 60 Sec ( 0.03%) 300 Sec ( 0.00%) "

There are 21 of these data OIDs with the final OID number = 0 to 20
