SAN vs Local Drives

Question

I know SolarWinds heavily recommends not using a SAN for your DB.  However right now we do.  Now it is a high end SAN many cabinents large run by an IBM SVC.  But I often see read and write disk queues in the 5-10 range.

We are considering going to local disk with a new server but I have a feeling it might be better but  not anything noticeable.

Anyone else running on a SAN and get good perforance or maybe jumped from SAN to local?  What did you see performance wise?

I am not challenging SolarWinds recommendations at all, I am just curious of the actual quantifiable benefit of going local .

Actually, we don't recommend against using a SAN. The caution we have on any DB-related configurations is write speed. If that's fast enough, Orion is happy. We do, however, recommend that your database be on a SQL server separate from the Orion box, and if your environment is really large, a SQL server box dedicated to just the Orion DB.

I migrated from local to SAN.  worked fine for a while, then did a SP or some event and it dove...after much efforts, I enabled AWE in MS SQL Server for that server's properties and it made ALL the difference in the world.
