Internet Monitoring

Hello All,

I was hoping someone out there can help me out with monitoring my internet usage from my locations. I currently have 10+ locations, and they all have their own ISP. Running one instance of NPM at my local data center. How can I test to make sure their internet is up and running from their local node? I know theirs a way to monitor the location where NPM resides, but not sure about other locations.

I know an answer is probably out there, but I don't have time to dig around. As this type of monitoring is necessary quickly.

Our new product, IP SLA Manager will do just this. You configure it to have the router at the remote site access a URL and you monitor the results in Orion. See http://www.solarwinds.com/products/orion/ip_sla_monitoring/

Are they using VPN over the Internet to connect back to the main data center or do they have point-to-point links?

I currently have 12 individual ISPs that I cover and I do a combination of public IP management and private IP management that I monitor through a VPN that we have set up to each of the companies. The only problem with going through the VPN is you can have false positives if the VPN link goes down. Expessally if you have an off site office or remote that goes through another offices VPN. For the most part though it works well enough and I only occasionally have things have alerts for going down that are really not down.

Beyond that management decision it is the same to monitor them the same way you would an internal node, by IP address and snmp.

There are many monitoring and management tools are available, which you can download to monitor Network traffic of all PCs. I can suggest you Tsarfin Computing, from there you can get all those kinds of software and tools.

Mcbridea's suggestion is a good one. However; if you want a solution without having to spend additional money you could go ahead and use the Cisco IP SLA technology at each of your sites and use the Universal Device Poller to collect the data from those devices.

This option will save you some money but will require learning to work with Cisco IP SLA manually as well as manually setting up the collections with the UnDP you already have with NPM.

It kind of comes down to money or time and knowledge; though I will say, if you plan to do a lot of this the IP SLA module that SW has will be worth getting.

In the end I think the IP SLA technology will be a great solution to your problem.
