Hello All,
We are currently running Orion NPM v 9.5 SP4 (with the NetFlow add on module) on some older hardware that has been slated for an update. The new host is now built and ready to be migrated to, but looking at the migration documentation, it looks like this may take a while to move. My main question is, is it better to move first, then upgrade to the latest version or upgrade first then migrate? As far as I know, the DB is currently hosted on a SQL Cluster and will continue to stay there; we will only be moving/migrating the web-frontend to the new server.
Here are some details that may or may not help:
Current:
Web = Win Server 2k3 SP2
DB = SQL Server 2k5 9.00.4035.00 (Intel X86) running Win NT 5.2 (Build 3790: SP2)
Network Elements: 1965
Nodes: 511
Interfaces: 1429
Volumes: 25
Pollers: 3543
Retain Detail Stats: 60 days
Retain Hourly Stats: 180 days
Retain Daily Stats: 365 days
Retain Events: 365 days
Our largest issue is time. We are a 3 man show for a decent sized network and are currently undergoing MAJOR upgrade projects in both our data centers and main access sites. We DESPERATELY need some of the new Trap and Advance Alerts functionality, along with the new grouping features. This will likely be something that I will have to perform over a weekend during my time off, so whichever way is the fastest would be ideal.
Couple of other things, I don't believe we are currently using any auto-discovered nodes, everything was entered in manually; is there a benefit to using the new discovery features and letting Orion find everything on its own, or should we just keep our current manual data? Assuming we don't have to move the main db, how long should it NORMALLY take to migrate a server, assuming everything goes perfectly (I want to figure out how long my projected downtimes should be)?
Hope that gives you a general idea of what we're looking at. Let me know if you need any other information.
Thanks!
