Monitor Nodes Availability

HI,

I'm testing NPM, i do a discovery form my Network and add map for the network nodes; I want to Use NPM to monitor Nodes (Routers) availability. I try to take one of my routers off to check if I receive alerts about that. but nothing changed either in the Map or in the Nodes. the router stay Green and didn't change.

I need help in this to continue with my test.

Hi,

How long are you leaving the machine off? As Orion is pinging the device for its status and the polling frequency is 2 minutes by default, so depending on where you are in the polling cycle will affect timings.

For the Alert for Node status, it is checking the Database for the criteria every minute, so you may not get an Alert action for a period of time after this.

For testing Node status, I tend to get firewall of ACL rules put in place in line between Orion and the device to block ICMP and SNMP, to avoid having to actually take devices down for testing.

 

If you have left it long enough, check the Admin > Polling Engines to ensure polling is working and the DB is updating (should be 'Now' or certainly less than 5 secs)
