New To Solarwinds - Questions about accessing Data

Hello,

I like how smoothly the demo installs, and how easy it is to work with Network Atlas and integrating the NPM dashboard.

I have the following questions -

1. What is the best way to understand if NPM is actually up and running? Is there a log file that I could check?

2. Network Atlas Console shows active connections and a count on lower left side, this is very useful, is there a way to read that data from the command line? Log file?

3. Can I use REST to pull data from NPM?

4. Can I use SOAP to pull data from NPM?

5. I'd like to grab data from METRICS, EVENTS and TOPOLOGY - are there log files or is the data just in SQLexpress?

6. What JDBC driver is used in the demo? What version is preferred by NPM?

7. I see agents can run on most UNIX, can NPM also? (or does it have to be hosted by Windows server?)

8. Is there a limit to how fast I can set NPM to gather metrics and events? Are there limits for topology?

9. Where can i find a list of your severity levels? Is there a way to map them to other tools (like HP BMS or OMi?)

10. Data in SQL, what formats?

11. I have my demo in a standalone virtual env, is there a way I could connect to an online demo service from Solarwinds so I can gather larger chunks of meaningful data?

Okay I've learned the following:

4. Can I use SOAP to pull data from NPM? - probaby not? There's no wsdl.xsl file.

5c. topology logs..../ProgramData/Solarwinds/Topology

7. Runs Windows Server only

except...../ProgramData/Solarwinds is more configuration logs....not activity logs.... sigh

And AppData/Solarwinds is similar

BUT - are there other levels for other types of devices/hardware/systems or is this one set for system events and one for i/o events?

1. Service monitoring and the fact the website is able to provide data

3. Here is a powershell example PowerShell script to modify a NODE Custom Property via Rest API/JSON

5. All data that solarwinds NPM uses is in the database including many of the settings. There are some logs, but it is primarily about the various services and actions it takes and does give device/interface details in it

8. NPM is mainly limited by the resources you dedicate to it. It can be broken into 3 basic parts, Website, poller, SQL. There are several polling timers you can adjust some in seconds, others in minutes.

11. I don't believe there is an online demo service like this, just the regular online demo that SolarWinds provides on it main site.

If you are evaluating NPM you may want to contact your sales person and see if they can setup a call with some of the support staff. They may be better suited to answering some of the details.

Thanks for your response! I especially like your approach with the REST script. In regard to the db I was relying on what I saw in format files, we'll have to read into what data is in the tables I think to gather data we need.
