Identifying the bottleneck
ryanbsmith
A representative from SBC Communications suggested looking at tools from SolarWinds.net to identify the bottleneck(s) on our network. Our company has a corporate office and a manufacturing plant that are separated by about 3 miles. All servers are located in the corporate building. Our issue is with the amount of time it takes to pull larger files across the line from the plant. Will one of the tools here help us pinpoint where the bottleneck exists so that we can resolve this issue? If so, which tool should we try and what functions will give us this information? Thank you.

Can anyone provide some input? I emailed Sales support and received what looks to be an automated reply, which doesn't help any more than reading the product description on the site.

Welcome to the world of Solarwinds Ryan!
The Solarwinds Toolset app will assist you in troubleshooting the links, routers & switches. It is mainly a management tool.
The Orion app is good for historical stats(trending)& baselining your network.
It is mainly a reporting tool.
Both the Toolsets & Orion will track the link utilization & interface errors & discards.
These are both great tools, but network troubleshooting also involves some detective work. Have you checked for duplex mis-matches from end to end? Have you checked the interface counters on your switches & routers for errors?
Nothing kills a network connection faster than TCP retransmissions due to errors on the network.
A sniffer will help identify if this is happening on your network.
Ethereal is a free network sniffing app you can use for this.
What is the bandwidth of your WAN link (what are you paying for & what are you actually getting)? Solarwinds can identify this part for you, as well as the CPU & Memory in use on your servers, routers & switches, which can also play a role in performance.
