Remote Admin Package - Manage Orion from your desk

Anyone using the Remote Admin Package? Is is any different than running the network manager locally on the orion server? We have several admins that would like to update orion without TS into the server...

Is there a link to the eval someplace?

I believe you can request this from Tech Support- I evaluated this several months.. Its not bad.. One of the major drawbacks is that you can't manage maps with the admin package, You will still have to copy maps to the server and make changes from the server.

We have it and abandoned it. It doesn't work like we anticipated. We expected the RSM would connect to the polling engine on the Orion server but it doesn't. Instead RSM connects to the SQL server database. So, each copy of RSM has it's own polling engine, doubling your ICMP/SNMP traffic. Also, RSM maintains it's own Report directory and isn't aware of any custom reports or changes you may have made to reports on the Orion server. We discovered these issues after we bought it because Solarwinds provides no documentation on RSM.

I have the admin package, it makes life easier for administration although it can take an age pulling down the node list into the system manager.

You can create new maps and reports but you do have to copy them to the Orion server and visa versa if you need to edit reports and maps remotely.

Overall once the node list was full being able to manage nodes and alerts was easier than using a terminal session.

whatever happened to the admin package?.. will it ever be production??.. would be nice to make core changes to Orion without having to access via terminal server session....

Is there anything new? Is there such a product as the Remote Admin Package? I could not find anything in the product list.

I have the Remote Admin Tool. It provides the following access into ORION.

MapMaker
Custom Property Editor
Account Limitatio Builder
Database Utilities (Maintenance & Manager)
Report Writer

I thought you could use a GUI for everything in Orion? Are you saying that there is no GUI for adding/removing nodes or interfaces? Isn't that kind of a pain in the hiney?

Adding/removing nodes is done on the server using the Orion System Manager as the GUI.

On the one hand, I keep hearing how easy Orion is to use. But on the other hand, I also keep hearing about how hard it is to manage. Orion has multiple user interfaces depending on the task, and something as important as adding/removing nodes is one of the most difficult tasks.

This has come up many times since I've been reading this forum and I'd love for someone at Solarwinds to respond. Are there any plans to improve and simplify the management interfaces and capabilities of Orion?

Please tell me "yes!"

Adding Nodes via Orion System Manager is easy. Sure, you can only access via the server it is installed on but it is easy.

I'm sure you could easily write an app that can add Nodes to the database that will run from any client PC that has the username/password to the database.
