Solar Winds needs a Dynamic Mapping tool

With the virtual networking, VLANs and subnet's on layer 3 devices that are connected via port channels, the old network atlas and Connect now technology are woefully outdated. if I am going to add a map to my my Orion site, I want to be able to add dynamic links so we can show actual link outages. This has been a feature in WhatsUp Gold that has worked wonderfully for many years.

I need to be able to visually map traffic by ports and application on a web site that is viewed on large monitors and the current web interface in Solar winds does not allow us to do that. The static maps that have dots or icons representing a single node does not do anything for us. we need to see the link and be able to instantly figure out where we lost connection.

dynamic mapping will be nice once it comes around but from your post you have not even been using the tool you have.

it might be static but you have always been able assign links/interfaces to the connector lines between nodes.

you can even assign multiple links to a line in the case of a port-channel

Dynamic will be nice once they give it to us but dont beat them up for you not using what they gave you.

Thanks for the reply, but i am asking for help, not a lecture. How do you map it? where is the documentation? will th elink show a down status in the map if it is down?

Thank you for the link. I have looked this before and the steps can work. I hope they can make this an easier solution. Monitoring and managing the monitoring systems are only 1/32 of my job and i assume that this is the case for most admins.

Is there a more in depth manual for the Network Atlas?

Gunner,

When you are in Network Atlas, just hover over the line you have between nodes. Right click and go to properties. Then add the end-points you want to monitor. I have the interface/sub-interface monitored at each end within my map.

If you look close to your connection, you will notice that you only recieve information on the tranmist and recieve for one end of the circuit. it does not monitor both ends at the same time.
