Interface alert greater than 80% for 5 mins
jonchill
I can create an alert that triggers if an interface utilisation goes above 80% but what I want to do is set the alert so if an interface goes above 80% for 5 mins or longer then the alert will trigger. Alert suppresions as far as I can see does not give you this option.
Anyone done this any other way?
Thanks

Set the polling interval for that specific interface to 5 minutes.

NG, I noticed that you recommended moving the polling cycle to every 5 minutes. Are you suggesting that the alert only goes off after the second notice. I was contemplating a way to set this alert. I was trying to think of a way to script the alert of send only after the second poll of that utilization.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,

Robert,
I currently poll all my interfaces for utilization every 15 minutes.
If you are polling a very large number of interfaces, I think 5 minute intervals
would add a lot of extra load to your server and switches.
At 15 minute polling intervals, you don't get any spurious/intermittent data transfers setting of the alert. However your idea of writing a script to delay the alert only if 2 consecutive polling cycles are above a threshold, is a good one if you are monitoring at 5 minute intervals. Let me know if you get this going, as there are a few interfaces on our network that may benefit from something like this.
I'd also like to create a similar script for outage escalations and/or acknowledgements.
If a node gets paged out as down, the on-call person has 10 minutes to acknowledge the alert. If not, then it gets paged out to second level support, and so on.
The piece that's missing is being able to acknowledge an alert from the website.

NG, The outage escalation sounds like something that a lot of us could use.
I have someone here that works wonders when it comes to scripting. In the event that we can get the alert delay to work, I will be sure to get you the information.
Thanks,

Did anything ever come of the ideas in this thread?
Like many others, I'm interested in alert generation following a set period of high utilisation. Though setting the polling internal high is a kludgy way of achieving this after a fashion, it's not ideal.
If anyone has tackled this and got something working using scripts or some other mechanism, I'd be very interested in knowing more.

I've not seen any further posts on this from forum members, but the SW gang is promising great new things for the alerting engine in V8. Let's hope this is one of them.
