Alert not getting Node Name

We are using the "Down" alert which sends out an email containing the Node Name using the ${NodeName} variable. Almost all of them work fine, except for a group of nodes that show up in our node list as (Unknown) when grouped by Machine Type. Can anyone help me determine what is causing this? We still get the alert email for these nodes, but it's basically useless without the node name.

Additional information:

I am just guessing as I did not set these nodes up for monitoring, but based on the lack of detail on their details pages I believe that all of the nodes in question are monitored via ICMP only. However I need to confirm that with the systems guys.

Is this the only way to tell if a node is being monitored via SNMP or not? When I go to Edit Properties for the node, that information isn't there (which would be nice!).

There are a couple of ways you can tell if a node is only being monitored by ICMP. The Node Details screen in System Manager will have a large blank area at the top of the window where the SNMP information normally is.

The machine type icon in System Manager will be a generic gray icon rather than a Cisco, or Windows, etc. icon that you get if SNMP has determined the machine type.

Last, if you look in the Node table in the Database Manager, the ObjectSubType will indicate either SNMP or ICMP.

Thanks, I think I have all of that straight now. I remember you mentioning this in class, now that you've repeated it again here. I guess it didn't register at the time.

The original issue is also resolved. The email was set up to pass the system name rather than the node name which works fine except for nodes that are ICMP monitored only.
