Several problems with NPM 9.5

Hi everyone. I'm disapointed with 9.5 so far since we upgraded from 8.1. Let me tell you the problems I'm having right now so some of you might be able to help me.

1: Performance is really slow since we upgraded. I don't know if it's because 9.5 is using more resources but it' really below what we were used to with 8.1

2: On first login, it will not always display my main map at all. I have to click on the "Carte du réseau" (main network map) to view my map. When I do so, it will ask me to login again even though I just logged in a few seconds earlier. This was reported to support and they said to check the IIS settings on the server but we haven't found anything that could relate to this.

3: Some features were removed from Orion System Manager to move them to the Web console. The most obvious are the Poll, Rediscover, Unmanage and Validate SNMP buttons that are now greyed out. I understand the need to put those features in the web console but why remove them from the system manager? It's not like you have to code a new feature, you just have to leave it like it is! As you can probably tell, I'm not a big fan of the web console. If I prefer working with the system manager, please don't cripple it!

4: When you want to check stats on an interface for a certain time range, you have to make sure to select custom in the time period field even though you explicitly enter the details in the textboxes below. If you don't select custom, it will just pick the time period that was selected. It didn't work like this in 8.1, it just selected custom automatically once you entered the timeframe and hit enter or refresh.

5: The UI in network Atlas is not impressive at all for me. It used to work fine in 8.1 even if it wasn't pretty. Now I have to search like crazy to do the most mundane tasks. Of course I'll get used to it but I'm not sure they went in the right direction...

6: If I change the monitored interfaces in a node when I'm already in network Atlas, it won't update the list in the Atlas unless I close it and reload it again (which takes forever, btw). Once again, it was working fine in 8.1

7: The grouping options in network Atlas are great if you actually want some grouping. I don't! I'm used to the No Grouping view of my objects since it's easier for me (our nodes all start with XX where XX is the company number).

I think that's enough issues/problems for now, I just had to spill it out. If anyone has any idea how to help with those, let me know.

PS: I've always been a big fan of Orion, it's just sad that this version makes me disapointed like that...

I am sorry you have not had a positive experience since the upgrade to 9.5, we have tons of customers running 9.5 happily and enjoying the new functionality. Let's see if we can get you there as well.

#1 - can you open a support ticket to investigate, also please read this thread here

#2 - this is not normal at all, once you login you should be good to go. What SP are you on?

#3 - We have had many discussions around this, you can find them by searching for system manager on thwack. However, the main point is maintaining and fixing bugs in two places. Also we made some performance enhancements in SP4 that have been well received around performance. What else don't you like and what is hard to use?

#6 - have you tried refresh, it's on the top left, next to the save icon

1: I did, and the ticket was closed. The ticket is 126551.

2: I can't really tell you what SP I'm on. I'm assuming it's the latest since I downloaded the install files less than a month ago. I'm also assuming the latest Hotfix was included. EDIT: I'm on SP5, I checked the help-->about Solarwinds Orion NPM

3: To be honest, I'm not sure I would have advised getting the upgrade had I known that the system manager would be abandoned like this. Are you planning on retiring it completely? As for the web console, I guess it's just a matter of getting used to it. I wouldn't mind, if I wasn't forced to use it by the removal of features from system manager.

5: Unless I'm mistaken, we used to have all the buttons/options pretty much in the same line at the top. I guess I'm REALLY not a fan of the ribbon menu system?

6: I tried and it didn't change anything. What is the refresh button doing anyway? Does it refresh the node list only or does it also refresh the interfaces for each nodes too?

#1 - I checked your ticket and it looks like the tech made some changes, however, if the performance is still not acceptable, please re-open the ticket and indicate as such

#2 - in the future you can always look at the footer of the web console to get version and SP number

#3 - Our long-term UI strategy is to move that functionality to the web. In general, what we hear (not just on Thwack) is that people want admin functionality in the web. If it's still awkward for certain cases, please let us know where. But if we were to try to maintain both an admin web console (which is a must-have for most of the user base) and a Windows UI, we would spend a lot of engineering time building features twice, which would mean fewer features overall. And that's not the result we all want either.

#5 - Try this, I think it will give you the style you are used to

To add a button to the QAT, right click on the button, and select "Add to Quick Access Toolbar".
To add a Ribbon group to the QAT (like in the first picture), right-click on the group's caption and select "Add to Quick Access Toolbar". Buttons and groups can be removed the similar way.
To hide the ribbon, right-click on the empty space reserved for the Ribbon tabs (right of the "Help" ribbon tab) and select "Minimize the Ribbon". You can also choose whether to show the QAT below or above the Ribbon.

#6 - Let me double check, I believe it is supposed to refresh the complete tree

#6: when the Refresh button is pressed, all information on nodes and their child objects (interfaces, volumes, etc...). If it is not, I would suggest opening a support ticket.
