Hi,
Does someone know if it is supported to have orion network man. and configuration manager application installed in a VMWARE environment?
Patrick
I have Orion NPM and APM running in a virtual machine (ESX 3.5) and it runs fine, no problems at all. I doubt however that it is a supported configuration.
Running Orion and its modules on VMware is absolutely supported. The only warning we give is that you do not run SQL Server on VMware. Orion is disk-intensive, and a DB on a VM is a receipe for poor performance. But just the servers are supported and may even be the most common configuration.
Is there documentation that tells you that NPM and all of its modules are supported in VMWare? Is there a "Best Practice" configuration on the VM Host to support a VM guest that house NPM? How should the VM guest be configured to run NPM and all of its modules?
The reason I say this is because I am running NPM on a guest VM and sometimes I get strange anomalies in Solar Winds. I sometime receive alerts with no data or multiple alerts of the same issue even though my alerts are set to alert you once. Just weird stuff like that. It is hard to pinpoint where the problem is coming from.
Is your SQL database running also in the same VM? People have had real issues with running the SQL server from in a VM. The database server from my experience really needs a real machine but everything else from what I've heard and seen can be on a VM.
NoeO,
Have you read through the "Orion NPM Requirements" sections of the Orion NPM Administrator Guide, specifically the section, "Requirements for Virtual Machines and Servers"? is your current environment up to spec?
As noted in the VM requirements, SolarWinds strongly recommends that you maintain your SQL Server database on a separate physical server.
We have Orion NPM running on a VM on a VMware ESX with a SAN storage behind that VMware ESX server. Also the database server is running as a VM on a VMware ESX server also conntected to this SAN.
Everything is running smoothly without any problems.
