I just want to be sure that I am not crazy or blind, but it looks like one cannot presently configure either a basic or advanced alert based on any syslog data.
Am I correct?

Syslog has its own in built alerting. If you open the syslog Viewer you have multiple actions in here for Alerting.
Go to file and Settings in syslog Viewer and then to alert Filter Rules. Create Your rules and Then select the Alert actions for the various type of alerts you may want to recieve,

joehanly is correct. It is a little confusing at first until you remember to look in the Syslog Viewer, but they are easy to set up there.
