Justification for additional web server

Database Server (Stand-alone)

32 GB RAM

I have been trying to find a document that shows what the suggested amount of concurrent user sessions that should access NPM web portal.

I understand that the information on Solarwinds.com is just generic information. Mainly because there are so many different hardware setup/combinations.

At first I only considered 15 – 20 users access the web site.

Recently I was told that 30-40 users will be accessing the site on a continuous basis, but there will be 100 users that will have access.

I have asked our server group what they recommend but I also want to get your opinion as well. The site is not live and I don’t want to get into a situation where the site goes live and is sluggish. The main reason for that is because it takes me a while to get software approved.

If possible, any ideas or documentation would be greatly appreciated.

Well my first question is how much CPU and Memory usage does your NPM Server average?

I personally think that your current NPM Server would be enough to handle the traffic load. Maybe 8gigs of Ram would be best but that really depends on how many devices and custom polls you have running on your NPM. On our NPM we are running the SQL server and NPM all on 1 server with only 4 gigs of Ram. We have over 300 devices discovered in Orion with about 60% of them running its own custom poll. We are maxing out our memory during peak hours of the day but its still runs like a champ. Although we dont have quite as many users running on our NPM Server as you are. We only have about 10 users hitting the server at any given time.

Below is the Requirements for Orion NPM:

CPU	Dual processor, 3GHz
Memory	3 GB
Hard Drive	20 GB
Software	Minimum Requirements
Operating System	Windows 2003 Server (32-bit or 64-bit) including R2, with IIS installed, running in 32-bit mode Windows 2008 Server (32-bit or 64-bit) with IIS installed, running in 32-bit mode
.Net Framework	Version 3.5 or later
Database	SQL Server 2005 SP1 Express, Standard, or Enterprise SQL Server 2008 Express, Standard, or Enterprise

Currently we have 600 devices discovered. Most send Netflow sending to Orion. I asked our server group today to enable SNMP on the server so I can watch exactly what happens.... will let you know.
