Basic Dependency Alerting Question

I have a basic dependency setup up.

I have a Cisco ASA-Firewall as the parent and Cisco 2960 switch sitting behind it (the child).
Today when it went down, I was expecting to get an alert on the ASA, but instead I received an alert for the
2960 being down.  I thought dependencies would alert on the parent being down and report the children as being unreachable.
