Need variable for the machine name of the polling engine for alerts

Hi,

I think that I may be asking a such a basic question that it hurts!

I'm trying to produce an advanced alert that includes the machine name of the polling engine, but I can't find a variable for the name and the ${EngineID} does not help our NOC quickly enough. Has anyone found one?

Being able to pull out default and custom properties from the polling engine responsible (rather than the failing device) to embed in an alert would be really useful. Are there any variables for this?

Robert,

There isn't a set variable that will grab that information. However, using the Insert Variable, you can build a SQL statement to grab this information. Try using this:

${SQL:Select ServerName From Engines Where EngineID = ${EngineID}}

Just pasting your line into the text area of my mail produced exactly what I needed!

I've found EngineID in the Select Variable lists, but not the other entries. Are they only found within the SQL database tables or are they shown elsewhere?

They are only in the SQL database tables, but not all tables will be able to be used for variables. This is why we have the SQL function at the bottom of the insert variable option. This allows to custom variables, so to speak, by being able to write your own SQL query.

Hi,

I've built up the text of alert mails using the Insert Variable > select a Variable Category & Select a Variable > Build Selected Variable, but it didn't include all of the fields that I need.

Your query worked fine & did exactly what I wanted, but some of the fields you used are not listed. That's why I was asking about a list of these fields so that I have the option of manipulating them into email text.

I can trawl through the database tables to locate likely candidates, but you mention that some cannot be used as variables. Are there any guidelines to know whether or not a specific one is usable.
