Cisco 6513 questions

I handle primarily Nortel devices in my current Orion setup. I have just been given the responsibility to asses the network problems of a 6513 in the network of a company that recently merged with us. I have added the 6513 into Orion but all I see are VLANs. I want to see individual physical interfaces to determine if there are any errors anywhere on the switch. There is a route processor in the chassis so it is used for L2 and L3. In my existing environment I have a Nortel Passport running L2 and L3. I have over 30 VLANs but Orion sees individual interfaces on that. Am I missing something?

You may want to see how you added you cat into Orion. We have 4 Cats in our Organization, and are able to monitor Gig interfaces, etherchannels, vlans, etc, so you should be able to do the same thing. Check out your Cat in Net Perf Mon and see if you have it added correctly.

The 6500 series switches can be a little tricky. You will have one or two sup cards each with a daughter msfc (for layer 3 stuff). You may have seperate IOS's on the msfc's then you have on the supervisor cards. In fact, in an older configuration you can have a set based OS on the sup and standard IOS on the msfc (hybrid setup). If you have two sups then you are probably running some failover type configuration. This can be an active/active or active/standby type setup. I am running a sup720 with a daughter msfc3 on my 6513. I an running IOS based 12.2x and had no trouble pulling indivdual interfaces into Orion.

To piggyback on what mschwarz said, if you are running in hybrid mode and added the switch via an IP address that resides on the MSFC (L3 engine), then you will see what you described (VLAN interfaces only). In this case, what you want to do is make sure you are using the IP address of the switching engine (SC0 interface), and then you should see the physical interfaces. You can have the L2 and L3 engines both monitored in Orion if you wish.

If it was running IOS natively on the Sup and MSFC, then you should be seeing all of the interfaces now.

That makes sense. We are running old hardware and probably old software too. I will see if I can get someone to send me the switch engine IP and try that. Thanks for the info.

You should be able to get the "switch engine" or CatOS side IP by doing a "show cdp neighbor detail" on the layer-3 engine.
