Different polling classes

Hi,

Is it possible to have different classes of poller? I'd like to poll 1500 routers every 10 minutes but more critical central devices every 30 seconds. i hope there's a simple way to achieve this... don't want to manually update the details of 1500 nodes, and don't want to have to resort to direct SQL interactions either.

There's really no way to change the poll rate (in bulk) for a particular group of devices, short of possibly using a direct SQL query. However, you can make a change to all monitored devices from within System Manager. If you have less than 1500 devices that you want to poll more frequently, it may be easier to change the poll rate for all of them to 10 minutes (if they're not already), then manually (or via a SQL query) change the more critical devices to 30 seconds.

I agree it would be nice to be able to apply "policies" to groups of devices based on custom properties or something of that nature, particularly if you're often adding and deleting a large number of devices.

Piggybacking on the SQL theory, you could create a custom field in the DB and group your devices accordingly. Then use SQL to set the polling frequency. Definitely a good idea and worth SW adding to the feauture enhancement list in my book! Let me know if you want example or some SQL help.

this question is old, so it may fall on deaf ears. I hope not. SW now sets the polling frequency at the template level. do you know how to update via SQL the polling frequency for individual monitors across multiple nodes?

You would write a SQL query to do this.

If you are not familiar with SQL, I would strongly suggest you learn some of the basics if you are going to be managing an NMS system. One of the best books you can get which has been referenced here in the forums before is Sams Teach Yourself SQL in 10 Minutes, well worth the money and time.
