WAN links Monitoring

Hey all,

I recently installed and deployed Solarwinds Orion, In my network I have several Branches that are connected to the central site in a hub and spoke fashion. At each site I have two links. I want to monitor both of these links and want to show the delays and packet loss for each link in real time on the Node details page.

How do this in Orion ?

you can only monitor/alert on the routers delay, not the interfaces...

if you added the interfaces, interface errors/drops etc. are already all monitored...

its just a matter of creating an alert for errors/drops...

if the interface itself never goes down, you will have to monitor something that will go down... there should be some IP that goes down if the link goes down, no?

if there isnt there should at least be some kind of events happening on the router which you will be able to read out via SNMP (just create a universal device poller for this), you can integrate these values you read out via snmp into orion, graphs, tables, whatever you want... of course you can then alarm on this as well!

packet loss can also only be monitored for actual nodes/IPs... its not the actual packet loss of course... it is the percentage of probes from orion that have gotten lost in a specified period of time.

Where is Orion deployed? If for example at the hub site just monitor each router at the branch sites and monitor both interfaces.

Orion is deployed at the main site. I want Orion to tell me how much delay and packet loss does each link to spoke is facing, and also notify when the there is an issue in the link connectivity.

Since the links are MPLS VPNs, issues in the connectivity arise even though the physical interface is fully functioning. How to configure Orion to detect such things ... I think I may need to rely on IOS EEM and Syslog stuff..

Orion can read out discards from interfaces via snmp.

You can alarm on that if you like. if you only want to do this for MPLS-links you can give those interfaces a custom property like MPLS-HUB and MPLS-REMOTE and create alarms that filter on this, views that filter on this, etc.

Hi,

Actually it is not a pure MPLS VPN environment as yet, As shown in the diagram are two hub routers at the main site and several spoke sites with dual SP links.

We actually create GRE tunnels, infact DMVPN tunnels. Now one of the main reasons and requirements for which ORION was purchased are as follows.

1 - Monitoring of links at spoke sites and create daily, weekly and monthly charts of Branch and SP uptime.

2 - Alert on realtime basis if any link has issue such connectivity loss and high delay. The WAN interfaces at Hubs and Spokes are ethernet and 99.9 % of the time are UP but indirect connectivity issues arise in SP networks on devices or physical medium from SP to branch modem. But since the modem at backend provides an ethernet connectivity the interface is always UP.

Can please guide me how to do this with ORION.
