Orion v8

Hey Martin,

There have been a few posts on the upcoming Version 8 features in the past few months.
Do a search for V8 in this forum.
I'm quite interested in the new Alerting Engine.
With people & devices coming and going all the time, my alerts have become a real mess & are almost impossible for the rest of my team to understand or maintain.
With over 2500 interfaces, it's a REAL pain to create interface alerts!

I'm also hoping they create a web interface for the Custom Property Editor, or allow updates from the Web Admin menu.
That would be HUGE! <hint, hint, hint....>

Thanks for the response..... did a search but it is mostly just speculation...

Surely someone from Solarwinds would be nice enough to post a deffinitive list??!?... or at least a WIP?!?!...

Or maybe even a section on the website for 'future' developements and roadmaps would be useful....

Oh well.. I guess I can just keep wishing for my utopia!!

Have you checked out Solarwinds new tool; Cirrus?

It's not part of Orion but it is "supposed" to work with it like the Toolset does. Cirrus is a Switch/Router Config management tool.

Alert profiles based on any combination of Custom Property values will be available in the Orion V8 Alert Engine.

This means that you could define an Alert for all ATM circuits with the custom property of "Building=Headquarters".
Or... All Windows servers owned by Finance.

This is an important difference in the V7 and V8 Alert engines. You will no longer have to go back and select each Node or Interface on each Alert when adding new Nodes.

Appreciate the insight into the Alert Engine of Orion 8. Do we know if we will be able to Edit the Custom Properties from the Web Interface, or will we need to continue to use the Custom Property Editor "program."

Custom Property Editing via the Web should make it into V8.

You will see pieces of the Orion V8 release before the entire Orion V8 upgrade is released. For example, the Wireless and Application monitoring engines were originally designed for Orion V8, but were released early with backward compatiblity with Orion V7. The Orion V8 Alert Engine will also be released as a preview with backward compatibility with Orion V7.

The V8 Alert Engine preview was originally scheduled for Q3 2005, but has slipped into Q4.

now we are getting somewhere....

Don.. what are we defining as custom properties here..... for example.. will I be able to load a mib for a custom non-standard device and then drill down to each of the OID's and add to the system...

Scenario - I have a Sinetica Netcom-TH module that monitors temp and ups in my DC, the I would like to add the relevant MIB OID to Orion and then collect data/report/alert in the event of an overtemp or power failure.....

At the moment I have to use another tool to do this (WhatsUP) and then integrate this into Orion....

I want it all and I want it now!!!

.. I don't support that tcp/ip port monitoring will come anytime soon??... ie monitor the telnet port on a box and alert in the event of a failure????

If Orion started to do all of the above... it would become a complete porduct and outshine many other far more expensive and complex systems....

Let me be more specific......

At this time, we can view Custom Properties from the Orion web site, but not change them. Orion V8 will allow you to change the Custom Properties from the web site. Custom Properties are added by using the "Custom Property Editor". The Custom Property Editor will most likely be integrated into the System Manager in Orion V8.

Let's not confuse "Custom Properties" with "Custom SNMP Poller".
The Custom SNMP Poller allows you to select any OID from the MIB database (or any one not in the database) and begin collecting data from it. This is quite a bit different from the current "Custom Properties" supported now.

We have attempted the Custom SNMP Poller in the past, but it has not been of a quality to make it into public release. We ARE trying again. I cannot say that the Custom SNMP Poller will be in Orion V8 at this time. I need to wait and see how well it works.

As for TCP/IP port monitoring. That is in development also and has been code named "Network Services Monitor". Some of you may have heard about it. It may be available as a Management Pack with backwards compatability for Orion V7.

I'm looking for exactly what you mentioned.
I want anyone on my team to be able to update the Custom Properties from the Web interface, but nothing else on the Orion Web site.

Basically we are tracking all our Customer info with Orion & are adding up to 20 per week.
Rather than having to RDP onto the server to do this, I'd like them to be able to add the info from the web interface.

Also, when we unmanage a node, we add a comment & date to the Comments field in CPE, which then gets displayed next to the node status on our Home page.
This will also allow us to update outage info on the fly & even add the Trouble ticket number next to the node for everyone to see, until the outage is resolved!

Don...since it looks like custom mib support is still not coming can I propose this? Can we send you guys certain OIDs that we wish to monitor in devices you don't support today? For example....we want to monitor CPU on a Netscaler load balancer. Simple enough I hope. Is that something that could be requested and have it compiled in a future release of Orion?

If I may, I'd like to give a suggestion for V8. I'd like the Icons for for Browse to, Telnet, Ping, etc. on the Web Interface be available depending on access (Admin) or that they become a separate resource so I can choose to add it or not. I know that people would still have to log on to the node and everything, but the less temptation users have, the better.

I was using a customized node list with grouping, I think one may want to have more than three groups and more flexibility applied to the way the selection is done, how about a small expression builder with an option for adding expanind groups.

hardcoded oids are of somewhat arbitrary choices and makes little sense. the user should browse via java or other nice web way all the mibs in object and choose what goes into the database. it gets trickier when you work with tables, for example i have ATM VPs that I want to monitor and overlap in charts, the relevant oid is little-know and well buried in tree. And then you want threshold values for warnings, alterts, the list of desirable things is long.

Don - do you know if SNMP v3 will be supported in v8?

What about v8 be have a 64-bit version. hardware vendors say you may get 10-40 % performance gains in typical cases.

Orion V7 supports 64 bit counters now.

SNMP V3 is working in our labs now.
At this time, I do not know if it will be incorporated in Orion V8 or not.
