sonar network discovery

good morning guys. i'm just new here in the forum and at the same time new with the use of solarwinds.

 

i've installed solarwinds on a server with 4gb ram and has 60gb hard disk. windows 2003 server.

 

i've already followed the procedures to activate iis and to activate snmp on the server.

 

and yet when i start to discover my server to test npm, it always see it as unknown.

 

unit has no antivirus and belongs to workgroup network in the office.

 

btw, its my first time to install solarwinds because i have to test it in the office...

 

do i have to allow ports for polling in our office firewall?

How we gather vender / statistical information from a particular node is via SNMP... When going through the network sonar discovery the first screen you will be prompted with is to add an SNMP community string... a ACL will need to be set if blocked for (default port 161) and of course a community string will need to be configured via the "SNMP Service" on that particular windows machine.. To do so go into your services, right click and select properties, go to the security tab, the top portion you will add a community string and the bottom portion will be an access list for which you will add the orion server's IP, once finished add that community string in the sonar discovery and specify the version and scan away!!
