Service Monitor in V8?

Hi Guys,

If I remeber correctly V8 was going to have an option to monitor services (SMTP, HTTP, POP3 etc) But I can not find this option anywhere.. Is this function still not available?

Although this type of monitoring was discussed as a possible 8.0 feature, it did not make the final cut.

We do not yet have a specific release identified, but we do plan to make this functionality available at some point in the future.

I would be interested in hearing more about the specific problems you are trying to solve, how you would see yourself using the feature, etc. We want to be sure to get the design correct.

Being able to monitor if a port based services is up and returning an expected response. Example, on machines running windows and IIS, since one application runs many services. Yeah WWW maybe responding but SMTP may not be and both are functions of inetinfo.exe.

We would like to use this feature similar to Big Brother. Basically, checking to see if port 80, 443, 25, etc are accessible externally to the actual server or appliance. This provides valuable insight as to whether a process or services has crashed.

It would also be nice if it could expect some sort of health check and timing... such as with X seconds, an SMTP banner should appear, or checking to ensure that telnet or ssh is available to a switch or router.

Also, another feature I have seen in other apps that monitor SMTP.
They have the ability to send an Email through the Mail server and pop it back out to ensure the mail server is processing the emails correctly.

We manage quite a few servers on remote sites and polling them doesn't always let you know if they are working. What I would like to do is poll the netlogon service as this has failed in the past without us knowing.

I currently use a product called Nagios that does port/service checking. We use it to monitor services on a server and it alerts if they have problems. As far as ports, we use it just like the two above threads read. On port 80, it looks for a valid web response. If it doesnt get one, it throws a flag. It is completely customizable too. I can set it up to monitor any port and expect any value I define. This would have been the greatest benefit for me of Orion v8 if it had made the cut. Is it possible this could come out in a service pack for v8?

What I'm hear are two levels of service monitoring.

One is a basic port monitor. Open port X and tell me how quickly that happened, or that it failed.

The other is much more sophisticated, where we would check for valid, protocol-specific responses.

Would the first, simpler be useful as a v1, if we could deliver it sooner?

a V1 with basic port monitoring would be very useful.

Also, we have a number of clients that do not allow ICMP Pings. They do run Mail / Web Servers, so if we could monitor their link status by using a service that would be very handy.

Yes, v1 should be can i open and how long did it take. v2 could be enhanced with open port wait for a protocol specific response. Couldn't this be done something similar to the custom poller? Tell it a IP:Port, then the response it should get? Reason I ask this part is that some out of the ordinary stuff, Apple's AFP service, are usually left off port monitor lists like this.

I think any addition for port monitoring would be benefitial. I wont be picky if we all have to wait for two different releases. Its just nice to hear that you are willing to work on these requests.

Whats Up by IPswitch has had services monitoring for many releases now. You basically configure Whats Up what service you want monitored on a server with an option of trying to restart the service if it dies. You have the usual alerts available.

Would I be correct in assuming that the "application monitoring pack (V7)" that we originally purchased with V7 does not work with V8?

The v7 version of the Application Monitor module is not compatible with v8 of Orion. However, a version compatible with v8 is available.
